Chagas disease:  Overcoming challenges in serological diagnostic and Trypanosoma cruzi diversity

Diagnostic of T. cruzi infection, relies principally on serological tests with limited performance and discordance among them that could be attributed to the very large genetic and antigenic diversity of T. cruzi. Recent genotyping efforts based on NGS point out that multiclonal infections may be very frequent, which may also interfere with current diagnostic tools. Associations between T. cruzi genotypes and the biology/epidemiology of T. cruzi are emerging, which may guide efforts to improve diagnostic tests.
