The Biology and Immunology of Trypanosomatid Infections group, led by Dr. Karina Gomez, has published a research article in the journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology.

The work is titled “A PQQ-dependent oxidoreductase in Trypanosoma cruzi reveals a novel redox activity in a eukaryotic pathogen” and explores the role of pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent (PQQ-dependent) proteins in the etiological agent of Chagas disease.

The Tc323 protein was characterized, revealing a PQQ-dependent enzymatic activity. The study showed that this protein possesses a redox enzymatic function that contributes to the metabolic adaptation of the parasite.
